Tustin, Orange County
The Navy built two enormous wooden hangars in Tustin in 1942 to house blimps that patrolled the coast for submarines. Each stood seventeen stories tall and more than a thousand feet long, among the largest wooden structures ever built. The base closed in 1999. Fire destroyed the north hangar in 2023, and the south hangar remains a landmark of the redeveloped site.
